Recent developments in positive psychology can be applied to develop a positive psychology of aging. One of the most important constructs in positive psychology is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence refers to the perception, understanding and management of one's own and others' emotions. It is important for psychologists to understand the application and usefulness of emotional intelligence. Because of the aging population, Gerontology, the study of ageing, is an important field to explore the applications of emotional intelligence. Traditionally, the negative aspects of old age have been emphasized. However, recent empirical evidence is emerging that highlights the less recognized skills, potentials, and skills of older adults especially with respect to how they understand and manage their emotions. Hence, more research on the applications of emotional intelligence to Gerontology is advocated.Keywords

The present study was designed to assess the subjective well-being and self-efficacy of performing artists. The sample comprised of 75 performing artists (25 dancers, 25 musicians and 25 theatre artists). For data collection Satisfaction with Life scale (Diener, Emmons, Larsen & Griffin, 1985), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (Watson, Clark& Tellegen, 1988), General Self-Efficacy Scale (Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1995) and an interview prepared by the researcher were used. Results show that the subjective well-being and self-efficacy of performing artists are high. Significant differences were found between dancers, musicians and theatre artists on satisfaction with life, positive affect and self efficacy. A significant positive correlation was found between satisfaction with life and positive affect, between satisfaction with life and self efficacy and between positive affect and self-efficacy. Findings have implications for enhancing subjective well being and self efficacy.Keywords

The present study was conducted to investigate the relationship between religious orientation, happiness and self esteem as well as to find out the significant predictors of happiness. The sample consisted of eighty undergraduate students of University of Delhi from four religious communities. For data collection Religious Orientation Scale (Gupta & Mishra, 2007), Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (Hills & Argyle, 2002) and Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (Coopersmith, 1967) were used. Data were analyzed using Pearson's Product Moment Correlation and Regression analysis. Results showed high intrinsic religious orientation, high level of happiness and average level of self esteem in the present sample. Significant positive correlations were found between intrinsic religious orientation and happiness, intrinsic religious orientation and self-esteem, and self-esteem and happiness. Extrinsic religious orientation was found to be negatively correlated to happiness and self esteem. Intrinsic religious orientation and self esteem emerged as significant predictors of happiness.Keywords

The present study aimed to investigate the relationship of occupational stress with emotional intelligence (EI) and coping self-efficacy (CSE). The sample consisted of 159 bank employees working in public and private banks in Delhi-NCR. Out of these, 87 were males and 72 were females. The age range of the sample was 27–55 years (mean age = 39 years). The Occupational Role Questionnaire of Occupational Stress Inventory, CSE Scale, and the Assessing Emotions Scale were used for data collection. Data were analysed using independent samples t-test, correlational analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Results showed that a significant negative relationship exists between occupational stress and EI, and between occupational stress and CSE. A significant positive relationship was found between CSE and EI. Multiple regression analysis showed EI as a significant predictor of occupational stress. Implications based on enhancing EI so as to decrease occupational stress are discussed.Keywords
